Franco Mastantuono received a rapturous reception from Fiorentina supporters outside the airport after arriving in Italy, as he closes in on a season-long loan from Real Madrid.

The move is set to be a straight loan without an option to buy, and there will be no automatic extension if Fiorentina qualify for Europe. Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Real Madrid will contribute to the 18-year-old’s salary during his spell in Florence.

The teenager already has a full season of LaLiga and Champions League football. Madrid paid €45m to sign him from River Plate last summer.

Despite being a senior Argentina international with four caps, Mastantuono will not occupy a non-EU slot because he also holds an Italian passport.

He is now expected to complete the remaining formalities of his loan in Tuscany.
