Matvey Safonov had a great game against Brest – and it came just at the right time as the doubts increased about his status.

Matvey Safonov had a tough start to this season.

There have always been doubts about him, and some bad performances (as part of some bad results) increased the volume of those doubters.

There were even some very ugly stats about how many goals conceded compared to how many shots on target he had faced.

Well, he more than made up for it against Brest over the weekend. PSG were desperate for their first league win of the season, and after scoring early through Ferran Torres they allowed their opposition a number of chances.

Fortunately, Safonov found his form just in time. He made some truly fantastic saves, including one amazing full length stretch to his left to keep out a towering header.

Safonov gets the critics off his back – for now

This should settle things down around Safonov for now, and perhaps for the whole season if he keeps it up. But it still feels inevitable that he will be the centre of much transfer speculation next summer.

However, if this is just the start of a historic run for the Russian… who knows?
