Grêmio’s biggest 2026 sales, Viery and Gabriel Mec, saw game time surge before leaving, delivering at least R$136.6 million.

According to Globo.com, Mec’s move to Porto is advanced and his minutes jumped from 43 in 2025 to 1,667 in 2026. The 18-year-old featured in 32 matches, starting 14.

After the World Cup pause he was used more from the bench. Coach Luís Castro cited a reshaped midfield, with three markers and no attacking midfielder behind the striker.

In 2025 an ankle fracture in March stalled him. Back in June he stayed with the under-17s and under-20s, was unused in six Brasileirão games, and ended with only two senior outings in the Gauchão.

Centre-back Viery, sold to Fiorentina in June, became first choice. He rose from 12 games in 2025 to 27 in the first half of 2026, from 678 to 2,665 minutes.

Last year he was even tried at left-back and was a reserve, and had been earmarked for sale around New Year.

Mec’s fee is 10 million euros, below earlier hopes. Grêmio receive 8 million euros, R$48.1 million, for their 80 percent economic rights.

Viery went for 15 million euros, R$88.5 million, with the club keeping all of it. The fee can rise by 2 million euros in performance bonuses.

Their rise has strengthened Castro’s standing. The board aim to use the academy to rebuild finances and maintain backing before a Copa do Brasil berth decider.
