Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero caused a stir when he used the word disgraceful to describe Spurs’ poor squad depth last week.
All eyes were already on the Tottenham captain as they prepared to face Manchester United.
He did not help his case by picking up an early red card, leaving Spurs a man down for several minutes.
Spurs unsurprisingly lost 2-0 because of the numerical disadvantage, as Romero was left with egg on his face after his second sending off this season.
That was the sixth of his Spurs career, more than any other Premier League player since his 2021 debut.
Romero has built a reputation as Tottenham’s emotional leader, a player who talks with fire about standards, mentality, and what it means to wear the shirt.
But leadership is about reliability, and right now Romero is failing that test spectacularly.
The “disgraceful” comment might sound passionate on the surface, yet it rings hollow when it comes from a player who keeps sabotaging Spurs with his own reckless, avoidable behaviour.
There is a difference between being aggressive and being irresponsible, and Romero is crossing that line far too often.
His combative style can inspire, but it also repeatedly puts Tottenham in difficult positions.
You cannot demand higher standards from teammates and the club hierarchy while consistently making decisions that undermine the collective effort.
He is now set to miss Tottenham’s next four games, leaving the team further depleted as they bid to climb out of the bottom half of the league table.
What makes the situation even more frustrating is the noise emerging from Argentina linking him with a potential move away from the club, despite only recently signing a new deal.
That raises serious questions about commitment and accountability, considering the situation on ground.
If Romero wants to be seen as the heartbeat of Tottenham, he must start delivering consistency, discipline, and leadership when it matters most.
