Vila Belmiro had minor renovation works under way on Wednesday evening, hours before Santos v Palmeiras in the Copa do Brasil quarter-final at 21:30 Brasília time.

According to Globo.com, crews were making tweaks about three hours before kick-off on the level that serves media cabins, press tribune, cadeiras cativas and suites.

The ground has been under renovation since the World Cup and will be expanded. Work on the fourth floor began on Friday.

In August the club started removing stairways in a stand and lowering the section to pitch level. This overhaul will eliminate the circulation area behind one goal and is expected to be completed in 60 days.

Capacity in that sector is expected to rise to 5,000, up from 3,200. The design also includes new access points and refurbished toilets, with further works planned on the lateral area and the fourth floor in the coming months.

Earlier, Santos split the steps in the same stand used by the main organised fan groups to create room for more supporters. The visitors’ section was the first to change, with 300 seats removed and concrete steps doubled to 45 cm, lifting capacity to 1,400.

The lateral sector opposite the cadeiras cativas will also be reworked, removing seats to extend the terrace closer to the pitch. New boxes and a bar are planned for the Salão de Mármore area, along with a new shop and memorial.
