Aston Villa pulled off a sensational comeback at Villa Park, overturning a two-goal deficit to beat RB Salzburg 3-2 in the Europa League.
The hosts started sharply and nearly took the lead inside a minute. Emiliano Buendía picked out Ollie Watkins on the edge of the box and his fierce strike was only half-saved by Alexander Schlager, who then reacted quickly to keep out Harvey Elliott’s follow-up.
However, the visitors soon found their feet and began to cause problems, particularly through Karim Konaté, who led the line well. Emiliano Martínez was the difference early on, producing an outstanding double save to deny Konaté and Soumaila Diabaté.
Villa’s night took a turn midway through the half when Watkins pulled up with a hamstring issue. The disruption showed almost immediately. Tyrone Mings was caught dwelling on the ball, Edmund Baidoo pounced, and Konaté bundled home the opener despite Victor Lindelöf’s attempt to clear.
The visitors carried more threat before the break, and Villa went in at half-time deservedly behind.
Salzburg struck again just after the restart when Kerim Alajbegovi? drove down the right and fired a low ball across goal for Moussa Yeo to turn in at the near post, leaving Villa staring at a damaging defeat.
But the game shifted following changes from Unai Emery. Villa began to play with more urgency and were rewarded on 64 minutes when Buendía slipped Morgan Rogers through, the substitute keeping his cool to finish low into the corner.
Villa Park came alive, and the pressure kept building. On 76 minutes, Matty Cash curled in a cross that Mings attacked aggressively, heading home to level the contest and make amends for his earlier mistake.
With Salzburg tiring, Villa sensed their chance. The decisive moment arrived three minutes from time when Kadan Young released Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba, who strode onto the pass and calmly guided his finish into the bottom corner.
Salzburg threatened late on, but Villa saw it out to complete a memorable turnaround.
