Aston Villa will take on Lille in the Europa League round of 16, while Nottingham Forest have been drawn against Danish side Midtjylland.
Villa eased through the league phase to qualify automatically, finishing second behind Lyon on goal difference, and now face a tricky test against the French outfit as they continue their European campaign under Unai Emery.
Forest, by contrast, had to come through the play-offs. Vítor Pereira’s side overcame Fenerbahce across two legs to book their place in the last 16 and keep alive their hopes of continental success this season.
The draw has placed both English clubs on the same side of the bracket, ruling out the possibility of an all-Premier League final.
Should Villa see off Lille, they will meet either Roma or Bologna in the quarter-finals. A potential semi-final could then pit them against one of Stuttgart, Porto, Forest or Midtjylland.
Forest’s route is similarly demanding. If they get past Midtjylland - who finished third in the league phase - they will face either Roma or Bologna in the last eight.
