Aston Villa sent Tottenham crashing out of the FA Cup and piled further pressure on head coach Thomas Frank with a gritty 2-1 third-round win in north London.
Villa struck first midway through the opening half, Emi Buendía finishing emphatically after being picked out by Donyell Malen at the end of a flowing move.
Spurs’ problems deepened when Richarlison was forced off with a hamstring injury shortly after, and the visitors capitalised just before the interval. Buendía turned provider this time, nudging the ball into the path of Morgan Rogers, who drilled a low finish beyond Guglielmo Vicario to make it 2-0.
The home crowd’s frustration was clear at half-time, but Spurs showed more urgency after the restart. Their renewed intent was rewarded nine minutes into the second half when Wilson Odobert lashed a low shot past Marco Bizot to give the hosts hope.
Tottenham pushed hard for an equaliser, with Bizot called into action several times, while Pedro Porro produced a crucial goal-line clearance to deny Buendía a second at the other end.
Despite sustained pressure, Spurs struggled to create a clear opening late on, and Villa defended resolutely to see the tie out.
Tempers flared at full-time as players from both sides clashed, underlining the tension surrounding Spurs’ ongoing struggles. With just two wins in their last 13 matches, Frank’s side exit the competition early, while Unai Emery's side book their place in the fourth round.
