Everton ended Aston Villa's 11-game home winning streak thanks to Thierno Barry's second-half goal.
The visitors were close to opening the score in the first few seconds at Villa Park after a long ball forward that resulted in Merlin Röhl hitting the post.
Just a few minutes later Morgan Rogers had an opportunity after Emiliano Buendía's cut back but the England international fired over the bar.
Unai Emery was forced into an early change when Evann Guessand, recently returned from AFCON, came on in the 18th minute to replace the injured John McGinn.
The Toffees thought they had taken the lead in the 34th minute after a short corner that Jake O’Brien headed in. However, VAR decided that Harrison Armstrong had been in an offside position and was interfering with play.
The Villans also hit the woodwork in the first half with Guessand's looping header bouncing off the bar following Youri Tielemans' delivery.
The Merseyside outfit eventually took the lead in the 59th minute after Pau Torres was caught out on the edge of his own area. Dwight McNeil unleashed an effort that Emiliano Martínez was equal to only for Barry to react quickest and loft the ball into the net.
Villa had chances to get back on level terms with Jordan Pickford needing to be at full stretch to deny Rogers but in the end the home side's excellent run in front of their own fans ended after 11 games.
That result means Everton finish the day in 10th in the league while Villa missed the chance to go second after Manchester City's defeat and remain in third.
