Villarreal B head into promotion play-offs with limited experience | OneFootball

Villarreal B enter the promotion play-offs with a youthful squad that is largely untested at this level. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, only three members have previously taken part in a promotion play-off.

They are head coach David Albelda and full-backs Eneko Ortiz and Iván Rodríguez. For Ortiz, this is a second promotion attempt, his first came with Alavés B.

Albelda guided Atzeneta to promotion in 2019/20, moving up from Tercera to Segunda B as head coach.

Ortiz featured in the 2022/23 play-offs with Alavés B for a step from Segunda to Primera Federación, but the team did not go up.

Rodríguez played the play-offs last summer, 2024/25, with Andorra and earned promotion from Primera Federación to Segunda División.

Elsewhere the group have endured more setbacks than celebrations. Goalkeeper Rubén Gómez went down from Segunda to Primera Federación in 2023/24, centre-back Ismael Sierra suffered relegations with Betis B to Tercera in 2021/22 and with Teruel to Segunda Federación in 2023/24, while young full-back Arnau Forés dropped from Segunda Federación to Tercera with Olot in 2022/23.
