Villarreal have confirmed the return of Carlos Romero and his contract extension to 2031, the club said in a statement. The left-back comes back after two seasons on loan at Espanyol and will join the first team. His previous deal ran to 2029.

Romero made his Villarreal debut in 23/24 under Pacheta. After eight senior appearances, he was loaned to Espanyol to gain minutes and continue his development.

Two seasons with Espanyol have established him as one of the division’s leading left-backs. Those displays have earned the Torrent-born defender a place in Villarreal’s squad.

With Alfonso Pedraza departing, the left flank will be contested by Sergi Cardona and Romero. Both will vie for a starting berth.

To mark the renewal, Villarreal posted a social media video celebrating their academy under the slogan “Made in Cantera Grogueta”. It featured images of Pau Torres, Álex Baena, Manu Trigueros, Alfonso Pedraza, Rodri and Nicolas Jackson.
