There was no Primera División this weekend, but there was international action featuring eight Villarreal players, led by Georges Mikautadze’s brace in Georgia’s 2-0 win over Lithuania.

Mikautadze struck first from the penalty spot on 70 minutes, then added a second in the 84th minute after collecting a pass from Nika Gadnidze.

Tajon Buchanan was shown a straight red card against Iceland on Saturday after an elbow the referee deemed violent conduct, and he left the pitch visibly angry. Canada drew 2-2, with Jonathan David scoring twice from the spot. Tani Oluwaseyi did not feature.

Renato Veiga played the full 90 minutes as Portugal drew 0-0 with Mexico. The 22-year-old left-sided centre-back is a regular in recent squads and looks set to play at the World Cup. Portugal’s next game is scheduled for 1 March against the United States.

Pape Gueye featured for 67 minutes in Senegal’s 2-0 victory over Peru and is due to face Gambia on Tuesday. After the match, Senegal completed a lap of honour with the Africa Cup trophy, and Gueye framed the occasion as more than a match, a celebration.

Villarreal full-back Alex Freeman, still bedding in and used mainly late in games, played 26 minutes as the United States lost 5-2 to Belgium.
