Villarreal close their home Champions League campaign tonight against Ajax, still chasing their first win in the penultimate round of the league phase. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the seventh matchday fixture began at 21:00 at the Estadio de la Cerámica.
After final warm-ups, the Villarreal anthem sounded and the sides walked out to the Champions League music. A minute’s silence was observed for the railway accident in the province of Córdoba, then the game kicked off. Persistent rain framed the build-up.
On six minutes, Nico Pepe’s corner found Sergi Cardona, whose header drew a fine save from Jaros, the Ajax goalkeeper. Villarreal began with real intensity.
A minute later, another corner caused panic, the loose ball reached Pepe at the back post and his powerful strike was again kept out by Jaros.
Alfonso Pedraza was named in the squad despite breaking his nasal septum last weekend in an incident with Anthony that resulted in a booking for the Villarreal full-back.
