Manchester City travel to Villarreal looking to get back to winning ways in the Champions League.

Pep Guardiola’s side opened their European account for the season with a 2-0 win over Napoli at home, spoiling Kevin de Bruyne’s return to the Etihad Stadium.

On matchday two, they were pegged back in the last minute by Monaco, as Eric Dier struck an injury-time penalty to salvage a point for the Ligue 1 outfit.

Now, they take a trip to the Estadio de la Ceramica, where they face Marcelino’s Villarreal.

The Spanish side are third in La Liga, five points adrift of Barcelona in second place and seven off league leaders Real Madrid.

Renato Veiga, the former Chelsea defender, snatched a last-gasp equaliser for them in a 2-2 draw with Juventus last time out, and they were beaten 1-0 by Thomas Frank’s Tottenham on matchday one.

This City side were defeated 2-0 at home by Spurs earlier in the campaign, but they have got into their groove now, with three wins on the bounce in the Premier League.

Villarreal vs Man City is scheduled for an 8pm BST kick-off on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.

The match will take place at the Estadio de la Ceramica.

Villarreal vs Man City team news

City have three injury concerns, and one of them is the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, who is struggling with a hamstring problem.

The Spaniard, who has only just overcome a serious ACL injury, is currently being assessed, but will likely miss out on this tie.

Rayan Ait-Nouri and Abduokodir Khusanov are both recovering from ankle issues, with the pair nearing a comeback, although this game will come too early for the pair of them.

As for the hosts, they are without two of their promising young centre-backs. Willy Kambwala, formerly of Manchester United, and Logan Costa, the ex-Toulouse man, are both out long-term with a hamstring injury and cruciate ligament tear respectively.

In attack, young forward Pau Cabanes is also out with an ACL injury.

Villarreal vs Man City prediction

Villarreal do have threats that can hurt City, but the Premier League side are looking more and more secure defensively as the season wears on.

Former Arsenal winger Nicolas Pepe is among their star players, while Gerard Moreno is an experienced head along with Dani Parejo, with the pair at the heart of the club’s Europa League triumph over Manchester United in 2021.

Ex-Newcastle and Tottenham forwards Ayoze Perez and Manor Solomon are other recognisable names in the home side’s squad, as too is Tajon Buchanan, previously of Inter Milan.

Those names aside, City should have too much firepower for the Spaniards, particularly with the boost of Rayan Cherki - “one of the most talented I have ever seen,” in the words of Guardiola - back available.
