Étienne Capoue (35) has cast doubts on Olympique de Marseille’s future in the Europa League after the French side eliminated Villarreal from the competition.
Marseille will later today find out their opponents for the quarter-finals, as they look to try and find a way back to the final for the first time since 2018. However, Capoue believes that they will need to show a lot more than they did against his Villarreal side if they have any hope of going far in the competition.
Yesterday evening, Les Phocéens avoided a scare as Villarreal came close to overturning a 4-0 deficit. The Spanish side scored three on the night before a late effort from Jonathan Clauss (31) settled the game in injury time.
Capoue has warned Marseille that they cannot perform like they did last night, speaking to RMC Sport, “It’s going to be complicated for them, there are big teams. We have already played against Liverpool, they remain the favourite in this competition. If Marseille plays like today, it’ll be difficult.”
The former Tottenham and Toulouse FC midfielder continued, “I hope they will play matches like they did in the first leg. Maybe they will be contenders for the title.”
