André Villas-Boas urged Sporting to make a proposed change to the VAR protocol on corner kicks retroactive to 2025/26 during the Portuguese Professional Football League’s General Assembly. Sporting declined his suggestion.

According to O Jogo, the intervention from the FC Porto president came in the voting phase after Sporting had proposed allowing VAR to review corners as part of regulatory changes for 2026/27.

One of this season’s most debated refereeing moments was a wrongly awarded corner against Santa Clara that enabled Sporting to score for 2-1 in stoppage time.

Villas-Boas is said to have argued that retroactivity would prevent the move being viewed as a mere exercise in hypocrisy. Sporting rejected that idea at the meeting.

Sporting also proposed altering the location of team benches at the same assembly. Both of the club’s competition regulation proposals were ultimately voted down.
