Matías Viña will join River Plate on a one-year loan from Flamengo, with an option to buy. The Buenos Aires club will announce the deal in the coming hours after the left-back’s limited minutes in Brazil.
According to Olé, Uruguay head coach Marcelo Bielsa has told Viña he will only have a chance of going to the World Cup in June if he plays high-level minutes at a top club.
River report for pre-season on Monday at the San Martín de los Andes training centre and hope to have Viña involved by Tuesday. The 2019 Libertadores runners-up want him integrated quickly.
Viña will work under Marcelo Gallardo, who was pivotal in securing the move. Gallardo has made clear he faces competition with Marcos Acuña and promised support to help him rediscover the form that took him to Europe.
At Flamengo, the Uruguayan was third choice at left-back behind Alex Sandro and Ayrton Lucas. He joined the club from Roma two years ago.
The loan will earn Flamengo $500,000, R$ 2.7 million. If Viña plays 50% of River’s matches in 2026, an obligation to buy 100% of his rights for $5 million, R$ 27 million, will be triggered.
