Netherlands striker Vincent Janssen spoke highly of Oranje’s chances of lifting the FIFA World Cup for the first time in their history, Voetbalkrant reports.
The 28-year-old started in Oranje’s first match in Group A against African Cup of Nations champions Senegal in Qatar. Despite the below-average performance, the Dutch national team managed to pick up a 2-0 win against the Lions of Teranga.
“This is something special, but that applies to all teams at this World Cup and not just us. We were able to change some things last week and I am happy that this worked,” Janssen said after the match.
Netherlands head coach Louis van Gaal spoke highly of his side and how they are contenders to become World Champions for the first time in their history having finished as runners-up three times including the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
Despite a below-par performance from Oranje, the Royal Antwerp striker echoed those views shortly after picking up three points against Senegal on Monday night.
“We first have to wait and see how the other favourites perform, but I am pretty sure we are among them. We are one of those teams with a lot of quality. We are here to become world champions. That’s our goal, so we won’t settle for less.”
