Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has welcomed Marie-Louise Eta’s appointment at Union Berlin, describing it as a historic moment.
Speaking on Tuesday, Kompany addressed the appointment at his press conference. According to L'Équipe, he said he was very happy about Eta being named Union Berlin’s interim coach until the end of the season. The remarks came on the eve of Bayern’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Real Madrid, after a 2-1 win in the first leg.
He said the breakthrough could open pathways for girls who play today and believe they can coach anywhere, build careers and succeed. Eta is the first woman to coach a Bundesliga club and the first to lead a men’s team in the five major European leagues.
Kompany cautioned against downplaying the significance, saying it remains something special. He also hoped Eta would be shown patience rather than being treated as if she were a man.
On Monday, Union Berlin chief executive Horst Heldt condemned sexist abuse directed at Eta online after her appointment, calling it scandalous that the club still had to address such criticism in 2026.
