FC Bayern progressed to the DFB Cup round of 16 following a deserved 4-0 win against Mainz. The Reds decided Wednesday's fixture early, scoring all four goals in the first half. “The game went perfectly for us,” head coach Vincent Kompany summarised. “Scoring early away from home was obviously good for us. We showed a very disciplined and efficient first half,” analysed Joshua Kimmich. fcbayern.com has more of the post-match reaction.
Max Eberl (board member for sport): “Our senses are always sharpened. We want to win every game. We're not thinking two weeks ahead, we're thinking about the next game. That's how we're operating right now, and you can feel it. Jamal is an extraordinary player and you could see that again today. Against Union Berlin, we will have to be patient. They defend very well. It's going to be a tough challenge against a strong defence. But we finally get to play at home again.”
Vincent Kompany: “We were strongly focused on our own performance today and had a good start. The game went perfectly for us. A 4-0 win away from home in the cup and through to the next round, that's top! The team is hungry, we're excited for every game. It's not perfect yet. The question is always if the team can improve, and my answer is yes. That's why we have to keep working hard. I hope the fans are proud of our work. Our goal is to win titles but now the next game is all that matters. If we keep working, we will improve.”
Joshua Kimmich: “Scoring early away from home was obviously good for us. We showed a very disciplined and efficient first half and had chances to score even more goals. The second half was a bit slower. We weren't as determined anymore, but this was our ninth time away from home in 13 games. It was good to be able to finish the game off this way. Regardless of his goals, Jamal can always make the difference. He moves very well in the right spaces, so it's tough for opponents to get a hold of him. He can always get through midfield with one of his dribbles. If he starts scoring more goals now, even better. We're approaching this competition one round at a time. We always want to progress. Obviously, our great goal is to make it to Berlin. I know how cool that event is. It's always special to play a final, but let's see first who we play in the next round.”
Jamal Musiala: “I just try to keep building my fitness, rhythm and flow in every game. I really like the way we're currently playing. If we do things the right way, we win games and take the next steps. I'm trying now to get into positions where I can score from more often. That was different last season. The more games we play, the better we know what do. We want to play with high intensity and score goals. We approach every game with the same mentality. Now, we're focused on the next game.”
Niko Bungert (sporting director): “It's far from ideal to concede the first goal after 90 seconds against such a strong Bayern team. We had high hopes. We got back into the game and were very unfortunate to concede the second. And then they scored two more before half-time. The positive thing is that we were decent in the second half and kept it goalless.”
Bo Henriksen (head coach): “It was a difficult game. Congratulations to Bayern. It was a deserved win. The first 15 minutes weren't good at all. Then, we improved a little but conceded the second goal. It was difficult after that. We have to defend better and we did that in the second half.”
Robin Zentner (goalkeper): "We were unable to create enough in the first half. On top of that, we conceded the early goal. After 25 minutes we started playing better but failed to create chances. It simply wasn't enough to keep the dream alive.”
Dominik Kohr (defender): “It didn't even take them a minute to take the lead. Today, they were simply on a level above us. There's nothing left for us to do but congratulate them. Unfortunately, it was clear after 2-0 that there wasn't much in this game for us. We wanted to give something back to the fans in the second half but I also believe Bayern switched down a gear.”
