Chapecoense host Flamengo on Wednesday at 21:30 Brasília time at Arena Condá in Série A’s round 19. Their last win over the Rio club came in 2018 at the same ground, even as Vini Jr., then 17, came off the bench for Flamengo.
In Globo.com's reporting, defender Rafael Thyere and full-back Bruno Pacheco, who both played that day and are in the current squad, reflected on that contest.
On 13 May 2018 in round five, Chapecoense won 3-2. Canteros, Guilherme and Leandro Pereira struck for the hosts, with Guerrero and Vini Jr. replying, the latter scoring in the second half from a Trauco assist.
Thyere recalled Vini Jr.’s constant movement and personality, saying he was hard to mark. He added his eldest daughter recently asked which Brazil internationals he had faced and was very impressed to hear Vini Jr.
Pacheco felt that quick goal underlined how promising Vini Jr. already was. He also remembered facing Vini Jr. and Lucas Paquetá in 2017 at Ilha do Urubu, noting the forward scored twice and excelled in one against one situations.
The sides have met 16 times, Flamengo winning 11, Chapecoense two, with three draws. Chapecoense’s only victories were in 2014 and 2018, and the last meeting ended 2-2 in Série A 2021.
