Vinicius Junior was heavy criticised for his poor performance during Brazil’s 0-0 draw with Costa Rica on MD1 of the 2024 Copa America. The 23-year-old answered back in fine style on Saturday morning.
Vinicius scored twice, and won MOTM, as Brazil defeated Paraguay 4-1. The Real Madrid winger was a constant menace on the left wing, producing a masterful performance – one that we saw so many times for Los Blancos during the second half of last season.
Speaking post-match (via Marca), Vinicius spoke proudly of his display.
“I always say that I never play for myself, but for the team, for Brazil, for my country, and I always try to do the best things, although it is not always possible. Today I played a great game, in accordance with the level of player I am. I know I can improve a lot to help the Seleçao, and this team, which wants to put Brazil in the place it deserves.”
However, some of Vinicius’ showboating antics during the match were not welcomed warmly by the Paraguayans, and their manager Daniel Garnero called on referees to do something about the Brazilian.
“He has a way of playing that is obviously not very comfortable for opponents to accept, but that’s what the referee is for. The referee has to put those limits on him.”
Real Madrid will be delighted to see Vinicius showing himself at the Copa America. Should he continue this form going forward, he will surely be the nailed-on winner of the Ballon d’Or.
