According to L'Équipe, UEFA has appointed a disciplinary inspector to investigate alleged discriminatory behaviour by Gianluca Prestianni towards Vinicius. The incident occurred during Benfica’s 1-0 loss to Real in the Champions League play-off. If the allegations are proven, the Argentine could face a heavy sanction.

Prestianni covered his mouth with his shirt as he addressed Vinicius, who had opened the scoring early in the second half. Vinicius, and team-mate Kylian Mbappé, were convinced he was called 'mono', the Spanish word for monkey.

The Brazilian, visibly angered, ran to French referee François Letexier to report what he had heard. Letexier immediately activated UEFA’s anti-racism protocol and halted play for about 10 minutes.

The game resumed after Vinicius chose to continue, even as some team-mates were ready to leave the pitch.

UEFA’s disciplinary investigation is to be conducted swiftly, with the return leg scheduled on Wednesday in Madrid. Once statements are gathered, the disciplinary commission will convene. Under UEFA regulations, Prestianni faces at least a 10-match suspension if the case is upheld.

Benfica also risk sanction after some supporters made monkey gestures towards Vinicius. Possible measures include a minimum fine and partial stadium closure, or a ban on selling tickets to their fans for away matches.
