Clashes erupted outside Mestalla before the Valencia v Barcelona match, leaving one National Police officer injured and two ultras identified with flares and smoke canisters, according to El Periódico Mediterráneo.

The trouble flared in the bar area near Avenida Suecia, the street used minutes earlier by the bus carrying Carlos Corberán’s team.

A large group of supporters, mostly very young and chanting slogans with Nazi symbolism, hurled drinks bottles, terrace chairs and cups at mounted officers and riot police.

Officers pulled back a few metres to regroup while reinforcements from elsewhere on the stadium perimeter arrived.

With riot police on the front line and the cavalry positioned behind, the unit advanced to force the vandals to fall back and disperse.
