Liverpool supporters know international tournaments can become a source of anxiety. Every challenge, every collision and every moment a key player stays on the ground is enough to raise the pulse around Anfield.
That was certainly the case when Virgil van Dijk suffered a worrying knock during the Netherlands’ emphatic 5-1 victory over Sweden in Houston.

Thankfully, the Liverpool captain was quick to calm any growing injury fear.
The Dutch defender delivered a reassuring update after an incident that temporarily left him unable to feel part of his upper leg. While there will still be checks carried out, his own assessment sounded positive.
With Liverpool preparing for a new era under Andoni Iraola, that will be welcome news.
It was another impressive evening for Liverpool’s Dutch contingent.
Cody Gakpo was outstanding, scoring twice and registering an assist as the Netherlands overwhelmed Sweden from the opening whistle.

Gakpo created the first goal for Brian Brobbey inside five minutes before the Sunderland striker quickly added a second.
After the interval, the Liverpool forward continued his outstanding display. He converted from close range following a Denzel Dumfries delivery before adding another with a composed finish inside the near post.
Sweden briefly reduced the deficit when Anthony Elanga scored after an assist from Alexander Isak, but Crysencio Summerville wrapped up an impressive 5-1 victory with a long range effort.
Ryan Gravenberch and Virgil van Dijk both started for the Netherlands, underlining Liverpool’s strong presence at the tournament.
The biggest talking point from a Liverpool perspective arrived when Van Dijk appeared uncomfortable following a heavy challenge.
His comments afterwards immediately eased concerns.
“I took a hard hit to my hip and I couldn’t feel my upper leg anymore, so that was a little bit crazy,” he told NOS, per GOAL. “But it was probably just a pinched nerve. I think it is not too bad, but we will see shortly.”

That response will offer encouragement to Liverpool staff and supporters alike.
Virgil van Dijk has become a symbol of reliability over recent seasons. Every club needs pillars around which everything else is built and Liverpool have one of the best in world football.
Nobody at Anfield will want to see unnecessary risks taken, but the defender himself clearly believes the issue is manageable.
The Netherlands are not mathematically through to the round of 32, although their position remains extremely strong.
Even a defeat against Tunisia would likely be enough for progression as one of the best third placed teams.
That means Virgil van Dijk is expected to feature again as Ronald Koeman continues to trust his captain.
His importance goes beyond defensive quality. He brings leadership, calmness and authority to a squad with ambitions of making a deep run in the tournament.
Liverpool will be watching every minute carefully.
Liverpool’s preparations for the upcoming campaign will inevitably be shaped by how long their international players remain involved at the World Cup.
With the knockout rounds running from June 28 to July 3 and players expected to receive a three week break after elimination, some returns may not happen until around July 20.
That could leave Virgil van Dijk arriving late for Liverpool’s preparations under Iraola.
The club are scheduled to travel to the United States for pre season fixtures against Sunderland in Nashville on July 25, Wrexham in New York on July 30 and Leeds in Chicago on August 2.
For now, though, Liverpool can breathe a little easier.
An injury fear has emerged, but the early signs suggest their captain will be ready to continue leading both club and country.
