PSG will again be playing in the play-off knockout stage to qualify for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 after their 1-1 draw against Newcastle United. Nonetheless, this route proved ideal for the Parisians last year, as they went on to win the competition.
Still in the match against the Magpies, they controlled their destiny by automatically punching their ticket to the Round of 16. The capital club had an opportunity to take a 1-0 lead early in the contest.
After a VAR review, PSG was awarded a penalty kick, but Ousmane Dembélé missed the chance. Nonetheless, the capital club would end up taking the lead with a goal in the eighth minute.
Vitinha fired a right-footed effort from outside the box into the bottom right corner, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia providing the assist. Both teams need a win to automatically qualify for the Round of 16 and avoid needing to play in the play-off stage to enter the knockout round.

Newcastle would level the scoring late in the first half 1-1, and neither team would find the back of the net in the second half.
Following the draw against the Premier League club, Vitinha spoke about PSG finishing outside the Top 8 again for a second straight season.
“In a difficult way, because we did more than enough to win the match and be in the Top 8,” Vitinha said (h/t Culture PSG). That was our goal, our objective, and we gave everything for it. Unfortunately, once again, we see in a game we controlled, where we had too many chances, that we couldn’t win. Now, we just have to see who we will face.”
