Elliot Anderson returned to Nottingham Forest duty following the death of his mother, playing the full match in a 4-1 victory over Burnley.

He had missed Thursday’s Europa League victory over Porto. According to Nottingham Post, head coach Vitor Pereira left the decision to the England international and later hailed his strong character, noting his quality, responsibility in the second half and leadership by example.

Before kick-off a moving tribute to his mother, Helen, saw Anderson lay flowers in the centre circle. Neco Williams accompanied him and placed a shirt bearing the number eight and 'mum' on the turf. The City Ground observed a minute’s applause and the 'Geordie Maradona' chant rang out during the game.

Hat-trick hero Morgan Gibbs-White secured a huge result for Forest, with substitute Igor Jesus adding a late fourth. The victory extended their unbeaten run to seven games in all competitions and moved them five points clear of the relegation zone.

Gibbs-White, who had held up a shirt showing support for Anderson after scoring the winner against Porto in midweek, said the midfielder is massive for Forest and that returning was his decision, calling it a horrible moment.
