The Federación Vizcaína de Fútbol will stage a tribute to the province’s women’s football pioneers this week in Bilbao.
According to as.com, the Hotel Carlton will host the Gala Homenaje on Thursday two July from 19:00, and 200 former players from the 1970s and 1980s will attend.
These women fought in the 1970s and 1980s to carve out space in a sport then seen as exclusively male, as the women’s game began to gain traction in Spanish society.
Among the leading figures expected are Maite Muguruza, the first from Vizcaya to become an international, and Ana Astobieta, a standard-bearer who later coached in the territory.
The day is intended to recognise and celebrate their sporting careers, effort and historic contribution, and attendees will be joined by a broad institutional, social and sporting delegation from across Vizcaya.
The pioneers are regarded as the roots of the game’s growth in the region.
