CD Castellón’s 3-2 win at Málaga kept their push for automatic promotion alive, but president Haralabos Voulgaris called for higher refereeing standards. The president said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, that officials and VAR must improve.
The flashpoint came in the 10th minute when a penalty was awarded to Chupe for a Diego Barri handball after a rebound, an incident that has often not been penalised. The decision went down badly in La Plana and among supporters, who voiced frustration on social media.
Voulgaris argued that referees and VAR have to be better, not perfect, but clearly better. He stressed this was not about a single call against his team, but about decisions over the last two months affecting almost all clubs.
He added that the stakes are too high to keep seeing similar decisions week after week, with many different teams impacted.
The victory leaves Castellón one point behind Deportivo and three behind Almería in the fight for direct promotion. Voulgaris hailed his players, calling the win in that stadium, and in those circumstances, truly inspiring.
