The 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) has been postponed just weeks before the tournament was due to get underway in Morocco.
The competition, organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), had been scheduled to kick off in mid-March. However, with less than three weeks to go, the event will be delayed following reported organisational and scheduling difficulties.
According to reports, the request to postpone the tournament came from Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football, with concerns raised about preparations being completed in time. Morocco was preparing to host the tournament shortly after hosting other major football events.
There had been previous speculation about whether the tournament might be moved to another country, with South Africa mentioned as a possible alternative host. However, it now appears the focus is on rearranging dates rather than relocating the whole competition.
Romain Molina of Sports News Africa reported that Morocco ‘has been warning for weeks’ that it would be ‘impossible’ to host WAFCON 2026 in March. A follow-up report has confirmed the tournament’s postponement.
At this stage, CAF has not released an official statement or confirmed new dates, leaving participating nations awaiting further clarification. The late postponement is likely to disrupt preparations for teams who were already deep into their training camps. CAF will reportedly make the news official soon, according to Molina.
Fans across the continent will now await an official announcement on when Africa’s biggest women’s football competition will take place.
