Walsall assistant Terry Connor is set to take a short break from his duties, with former Birmingham City player Michael Johnson stepping in for the Good Friday home game against Gillingham.
The club said in a statement that Connor will be away for a short period before returning, and that Johnson will join interim head coach Darren Byfield and his staff immediately.
Connor, 61, took over as assistant head coach last month after Gary Waddock left to become manager of National League side Wealdstone. He had earlier served as interim when Waddock underwent ankle surgery earlier in the season.
Johnson made 262 appearances in eight years at Birmingham, scoring 12 goals and reaching the 2001 League Cup final. His playing career also included Derby County, Notts County and Sheffield Wednesday, plus 13 caps for Jamaica, and he played alongside Byfield at international level.
Now 52, he later managed Guyana and had a brief caretaker spell at Notts County in 2009, then worked as their youth coach. He has since held roles with Cardiff City under-21s and within the FA across the English youth set-up.
