Walsall assistant Terry Connor will take a short break from his duties, with Michael Johnson joining the backroom team on a temporary basis.

The club said in a statement that Connor will be absent for a short period before returning to the dugout as normal, and that former Birmingham City player Johnson has linked up with interim head coach Darren Byfield with immediate effect.

Johnson will be in the dugout alongside Byfield when Walsall host Gillingham on Good Friday.

The 61-year-old Connor replaced Gary Waddock as assistant head coach last month after Waddock left to become manager of National League side Wealdstone. He had previously acted as interim assistant while Waddock underwent ankle surgery earlier this season.

Johnson made 262 appearances across eight years for Birmingham City, scoring 12 goals and reaching the 2001 League Cup final. His playing career also took in Derby County, Notts County and Sheffield Wednesday, and he won 13 caps for Jamaica, featuring alongside Byfield.

The 52-year-old later managed Guyana’s national team, had a brief caretaker spell at Notts County in 2009, then worked as their youth coach. More recently he has held roles with Cardiff City under-21s and within the FA across the English youth pathway.
