Walter Casagrande insists Corinthians should renew Memphis Depay’s contract without any salary increase, with the forward already free to sign a pre-contract and tied until 20 June 2026. He could leave at the end of his term without a fee.

“There cannot be a raise. There cannot be a raise. He earns a lot. Corinthians are in a tremendous financial crisis, they have a gigantic debt. So, if he renews, there cannot be a raise. There is no need for a raise.” He was speaking to UOL News Esporte.

A significant share of the No 10’s wages is funded by a R$ 57 million contribution from main sponsor Esportes da Sorte. The club still covers about 20 percent of a monthly salary estimated at roughly R$ 3 million, plus performance bonuses. There is also an outstanding R$ 25 million in bonuses amid a gross debt near R$ 2.8 billion, though Depay has signalled a willingness to talk.

“Memphis Depay is the biggest idol of this current Corinthians generation. He was very important for Corinthians. He came here because he had no market. His performances at Corinthians made him important again in European football.”

Depay joined Corinthians in September 2024 and has played 70 matches, 55 as a starter, scoring 19 goals with 15 assists. He was influential in the 2025 Campeonato Paulista and Copa do Brasil wins, and the 2026 Supercopa do Brasil.

“If the Netherlands do very well at the World Cup and he does very well, he will get a big team in Europe.” Ronald Koeman’s side are in Group F with Japan, Tunisia and one of Ukraine, Sweden, Poland or Albania from the European playoffs.

On the pitch, Depay could return on Thursday at 19:30 when Corinthians visit Athletico-PR at the Arena da Baixada in Brasileirão round two.
