Wan-Bissaka outplays Rashford to uphold incredible World Cup stat | OneFootball

It has been a World Cup of record-breakers and incredible feats so far, with seemingly every nation’s superstar keen to make a huge impact.

Yesterday’s crunch match between England and DR Congo was no different, as Harry Kane scored a brace to move ahead of legendary figure Pele on the all-time World Cup scoring charts, taking his total to thirteen goals. England’s lethal finisher was not the only player on the pitch to complete an incredible feat, however.

Former Manchester United full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka had a tough assignment in the match, as he was tasked with keeping Marcus Rashford out of the game. However, the DR Congo international had no trouble restricting the United winger and, in doing so, maintained an incredible personal achievement.

Underwhelming outing for Marcus Rashford

It has been a mixed bag of a summer for England international Rashford. Although he was included in England’s World Cup squad, Barcelona opted against making his loan move permanent.

To make matters worse, it was the man Barcelona opted to sign instead of Rashford, Anthony Gordon, who was given the starting spot as England’s left winger in their first group game. The former Newcastle player kept hold of the starting berth despite Rashford scoring after coming on as a substitute against Croatia.

Rashford eventually fought his way into the team and has started each of England’s last two games, although he has failed to show the best sides of his game. His crossing has often been wayward and his finishing equally poor. To compound his misery, he received no joy when facing his former teammate Wan-Bissaka, who marked Rashford out of the game with ease.

Impressive World Cup for Congo

Despite their elimination from the tournament at the hands of Thomas Tuchel’s England last night, it has been a World Cup to remember for DR Congo. Before the tournament began, they were given little to no chance of progressing through the group stage.

Yet, thanks to wondrous defensive performances from their back line, including former United centre-back Axel Tuanzebe, they managed to qualify as one of the eight best third-placed teams. Impressively, they shut out the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Portugal’s all-time record appearance holder Cristiano Ronaldo in their first group game.

As expected, West Ham United defender Wan-Bissaka was a crucial part of the team and, despite exiting the tournament with two defeats and having faced some of the best wingers in the world, he leaves the tournament holding onto an incredible feat.

An incredible achievement

Despite facing up against the likes of Rashford, Gordon and Rafael Leão, the former United defender was never dribbled past in the entire tournament.

While Wan-Bissaka has always been seen as one of the best one-on-one defenders in the Premier League, with his long legs even leading to him gaining the nickname ‘The Spider’, it is a pleasure to see the former United man showcase his talents on the world stage.

Given West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League last season, the DR Congo international will likely be hoping for a move back to England’s top tier and, on the back of his exceptional World Cup performances, he certainly deserves it.
