Jose Mourinho’s side saved by unlikely source in Anatoliy Trubin as nine-man Los Blancos miss out on top-eight finish again
Goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin scored a last-gasp goal as Jose Mourinho’s Benfica stunned Real Madrid to keep their Champions League campaign alive.
The Ukraine international sent a 98th-minute header from a Fredrik Aursnes free-kick soaring past opposite number Thibaut Courtois and into the bottom corner to spark wild scenes of celebration at the Estadio da Luz during a dramatic finale to the latest league phase of Europe’s elite club competition.
Such an unlikely goal secured a shock 4-2 victory for Benfica in Lisbon and rescued a last-ditch play-off place, with the Portuguese giants having been heading out of Europe altogether on goals scored before Trubin’s memorable stoppage-time intervention.
Instead they finished 24th at the expense of Roberto De Zerbi’s Marseille, who now exit the Champions League by the thinnest of margins after a 3-0 loss to Club Brugge in Belgium.
It also gave Mourinho a huge boost and bragging rights over his former employers, having been under significant pressure of late with Benfica sitting third in the Primeira Liga and struggling on the continent as well as losing to rivals Porto in the quarter-finals of the Portuguese Cup earlier this month.
Alvaro Arbeloa’s Madrid led on the half-hour mark through Kylian Mbappe, though went in at the interval 2-1 behind thanks to Andreas Schjelderup and a penalty from Vangelis Pavlidis.
Schjelderup struck again to increase the hosts’ advantage, with Mbappe also completing his brace before Los Blancos saw both Raul Asencio and Rodrygo sent off after receiving second yellow cards ahead of Trubin’s goal in a remarkable period of second-half stoppage time.
Madrid will join Benfica in the knockout play-off round, having finished ninth - a point adrift of Manchester City, Sporting, Chelsea and Barcelona. It is the second year in a row in which they have failed to qualify directly for the last 16.
