Manchester United are preparing to travel to the MKM Stadium to face Hull City in their first Premier League game of the 2026/27 season. The Red Devils finished last season on a high, securing third place in the league table and earning qualification for the Champions League.
The English giants have subsequently upgraded their squad over the summer, signing Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos, and Karl Darlow. Recent reports suggest that a deal is also in place for Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba.
Optimism is understandably high among fans, who had to endure 14 months of doom under former head coach Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese took charge of United in November 2024 and oversaw a dismal 15th-placed finish in the Premier League.
Despite investing heavily in the squad last summer, results failed to improve, adding to frustration among fans. However, everything changed following the arrival of Michael Carrick, who took charge initially as Amorim’s temporary replacement in January and turned the club’s season around.
Carrick spent 12 seasons with United during his playing days, retiring at Old Trafford in 2018 and joining Jose Mourinho’s backroom staff. He was also part of former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s setup in a spell that promised so much but failed to deliver on trophies.
The Englishman was briefly in charge after the Norwegian lost his job at the end of 2021, before moving on to pursue a managerial career of his own. He returned to take charge of the Red Devils this January and started with a four-game winning run in the Premier League, including victories over Arsenal and Manchester City.
For the record, Amorim had never managed to register four consecutive wins in his entire reign. Carrick went on to register 12 wins and just two defeats in 17 games, transforming the Red Devils into the most in-form team in the league.
His efforts earned him the full-time job, with the former midfielder now tasked with getting the fallen giants back to their glory days. Former Chelsea defender John Terry has now made a surprise prediction for United ahead of the new season.
Speaking on Supersport Football, Terry tipped United to finish second in the Premier League this season. He said: “I think the top four is going to be Arsenal, Man United, Liverpool, depending on the points of Manchester City for me.”
The former Chelsea skipper also lauded INEOS’ decision to make Carrick’s stay permanent, while reserving special praise for his No. 2 Steve Holland. Terry said: “Man United are transitioning, but they are coming back.”
“It feels like they are going to be better under Carrick and I think it is a great signing getting Carrick in the building. Steve Holland is there as well, he is a fantastic coach.”
United legend Roy Keane recently expressed doubts about the club’s title chances this season, but that is hardly going to stop fans from being optimistic. Terry’s comments, as such, suggest that the Red Devils have the ingredients to surprise everyone this campaign.
