Real Madrid have received a mixed update ahead of their crucial UEFA Champions League encounter, with Kylian Mbappe returning to training but not without raising fresh concerns.

Los Blancos head into the second leg against Manchester City with a commanding 3-0 advantage, which, on paper, reduces the urgency to rush their star forward back into action.

However, recent developments in training have introduced an element of doubt that cannot be ignored.

What’s the story?

During the final training session at the Etihad Stadium, Mbappe was spotted showing visible discomfort.

While working alongside his teammates, the Frenchman appeared to clutch his knee momentarily, a gesture that immediately caught attention on social media given his recent injury history.

This moment is particularly worrying when placed in context.

Mbappe has been dealing with issues in the same area since the end of 2025, and his reaction during training suggested that the discomfort may not be entirely behind him.

His facial expression only added to the concern, hinting that Real Madrid’s medical staff and coaching team may need to tread carefully.

Despite that brief scare, there is also a more reassuring side to the situation.

Reports indicate that Mbappe, who travelled with the squad to Manchester, was able to complete the full training programme set out by Alvaro Arbeloa without any major setbacks.

That development keeps him in contention for the match.

However, Arbeloa remained deliberately vague during his pre-match press conference, offering no clear indication on whether Mbappe will start or be used from the bench.

Ultimately, the situation calls for caution. Arbeloa must weigh the importance of protecting his star player against the temptation to secure the tie early.

With the margin already in their favour, the sensible approach may well be to manage Mbappe’s minutes carefully rather than expose him to unnecessary risk.
