Danny Rohl would be a dream appointment for Watford if Paulo Pezzolano loses his job following their disappointing start to the season.

Even though he is just six league games into his career at Watford, you could understand if Paulo Pezzolano was concerned about his future at Vicarage Road.

After all, he hasn’t just joined any old club, with the Hornets having built a reputation for sacking managers on a regular basis under the Pozzo family, who own the club.

Whilst they’re often ridiculed for that stance, the reality is that under the current regime, Watford have enjoyed a relatively successful period in their history, which included five years in the Premier League on the bounce from 2015, with an FA Cup final appearance thrown in as well.

Watford endure slow start under Paulo Pezzolano

Yet, there’s no doubt recent years have been tough for the club, and they’ve just started a fourth consecutive campaign outside the top-flight.

Once again, it was a busy summer for Watford, as they generally targeted younger players to strengthen the squad, with Pezzolano, a man who has won promotion to the top division in Spain, Uruguay and Brazil, tasked with trying to add another to his CV in England.

But, five points from six games shows he has not got off to a good start, and the manner of the performances are also a concern.

With the Pozzo family having previously shown how ruthless they can be, it would be no surprise if the pressure is already building on Pezzolano.

Danny Rohl would be a statement appointment for Watford

Of course, working for owners who are known for sacking managers can put off some candidates, but Watford are still an attractive option.

Most managers on the planet want to work in the Premier League, with the Hornets offering a route to do just that, and they also have a talented squad with some exciting individuals that can make a difference.

So, if Watford are on the lookout for a successor to Pezzolano, they should be going all out to bring Danny Rohl to the club.

The 36-year-old has been out of work since leaving Sheffield Wednesday in July, but he enhanced his reputation as a manager due to how he kept the team in the Championship against all odds after his arrival, before securing a mid-table finish despite the turmoil engulfing the club.

Therefore, convincing him to join Watford would be difficult, but the reality is that Rohl could have control to shape the team in the way he wants.

His main asset is his ability to improve individuals, which is because of his meticulous methods on the training pitch, so he would appreciate a lot of the talent at Watford. Plus, as a younger group, they would be receptive to his ideas, and he could quickly shape the team in the way he wanted.

When you consider the problems he came across in Yorkshire, working for the Pozzo family might seem a breeze, and it would give the German a chance to show why he was so highly-rated.

Realistically, if he wants to stay in England, his next job will come in the Championship, so if Watford can put forward an attractive proposal, it may tempt him to return to the dugout.

In an ideal world, Pezzolano would turn things around quickly with Watford, and if they could put a few wins together in quick succession, the outlook would be very different.

It also seems hugely unfair to be questioning a manager who is literally just months into his new job. But, this is Watford, and changes will be made if things don’t improve quickly.

If they do go down that route, Rohl would be the dream appointment for the club - and it would be a real statement of intent by the Pozzo family, who are facing increased scrutiny due to Watford’s struggles.
