Wayne Rooney has set out why Man United did not move for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, citing concerns over the striker’s injuries rather than his talent.
According to Leedsunited.news, Leeds pulled off a summer coup to sign Calvert-Lewin. After 10 Premier League outings he had one goal, and with the forward believed to be among the highest earners, some supporters worried he was past his best.
The past five matches have changed the mood. Calvert-Lewin has six goals in that run, taking his tally to seven, and he has scored in five successive league games, a Leeds feat matched only by Mark Viduka.
Calvert-Lewin has said he turned down Champions League clubs. Reports mentioned Jose Mourinho’s interest, yet the striker rejected a reported £18m package from Fenerbahce to remain in England, while Newcastle, Milan and Man United also made approaches. He chose Leeds because he felt he would be first choice.
Speaking on his podcast, Rooney said there had been talks linking Calvert-Lewin with United, but clubs were reluctant to take the risk given his injury record, not his ability. He added that a pay-as-you-play idea had even been discussed, and that recent goals show his quality.
Rooney and Gary Lineker view England World Cup talk as premature. If the scoring streak continues, Calvert-Lewin could yet haul Leeds clear on his own.
