Wayne Rooney and Manchester United really was a match made in heaven.
Having caught the eye of the entire football world with his sparkling start to life at Everton, Sir Alex Ferguson went all out to secure the services of the rising superstar.
It proved to be one of the best pieces of business the Premier League has ever seen with Rooney taking the pressures of playing for United on his broad shoulders and carrying them like a seasoned veteran.
It was like he had always been destined to lead the line at Old Trafford and went about the business of making himself a club legend with vicious efficiency.
His dogmatic approach and sheer-bloody-mindedness, combines with supreme skill and vision made Rooney one of the most feared hitmen on the planet.
He was also one of those special few players who could take a game by the scruff of the neck and single-handedly turn the tide in his favour.
The Football Terrace:
No one learnt that lesson harder perhaps than AC Milan did in 2009/10 Champions League.
The Italian giants, boasting the likes of David Beckham, Pirlo and, of course, Ronaldinho among their ranks would have been confident of felling United to book a spot in the quarter finals.
They would’ve have been in an even better mood when the aforementioned Ronaldinho got the ball rolling with a deflected finish to grab the first goal of the tie.
From that point on, however, it was all about Rooney.
The then 24-year-old got the bit between his teeth and plundered a staggering four goals across the two legs as United cruised to frightfully comfortable 7-2 aggregate victory.
If that alone does not sound incredible, perhaps the below footage will give you the satisfaction you seek.
Unreal – the man was tearing the likes of Thiago Silva and Alessandro Nesta to bits.
Rooney would go onto score 34 goals that season as he was named the PFA Player of the Year.
Sadly, an ankle sprain picked up against Bayern Munich saw the latter months fall by the wayside in a season that could’ve broken all of the records.
