Wayne Rooney reveals plan for Man Utd return | OneFootball

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has revealed he would love to manage the club one day.

Rooney has just been appointed as head coach of Championship side Plymouth Argyle - his first job back in management since he was sacked by Birmingham City after a terrible three-month reign.

He oversaw just 15 matches at Birmingham, losing nine and ultimately contributing to their relegation to League One, dropping to 22nd after previously sitting as high as sixth prior to his arrival at St Andrew's.

Plymouth edged out Rooney's former club Birmingham to secure Championship safety on the last day of the season, with the Pilgrims finishing only a point above the Blues.

Despite a troubling start to his time in management, Rooney dreams of returning to Old Trafford in the dugout. Speaking on The Overlap, he said: "I've always said that I'd love to manage Everton or Manchester United.

"I'd probably say United, that would be the pinnacle to manage Manchester United. Everton would be more from an emotional standpoint, a club I support and love, but United would be the pinnacle really."

With this interview taking place prior to his Plymouth appointment, Rooney also detailed his plans to impress back on the touchline.

"Obviously I want to get back into management. It's something I want to do and prove to myself. The last one, I was disappointed with myself with the results but also with how it ended."

Rooney has also had spells managing Derby County and DC United in Major League Soccer. He won just 25 of his 84 games in charge of Derby between November 2020 and June 2022, before moving to the USA, where he saw only 14 wins in 53 games.
