Manchester City fans have responded in their hundreds to a very simple question: What business does the club still need to do during the rest of the transfer window?
Hugo Viana – the Etihad Stadium’s new sporting director – got off to a flying start during the ongoing summer market, as he welcomed four new additions into Pep Guardiola’s playing squad in time for the FIFA Club World Cup.
Having found a need to replace Scott Carson in the third-choice goalkeeping role with Chelsea’s Marcus Bettinelli arriving in his position, Rayan Ait-Nouri added depth into the defensive ranks.
Further forward and bolstering the midfield roles, Tijjani Reijnders came into the Etihad Stadium in a big-money move from AC Milan, followed by Lyon’s creative spark Rayan Cherki after Kevin De Bruyne’s free transfer move to Napoli.
Nevertheless, those signings were unable to progress Manchester City any further than the last-16 stage of the Club World Cup, as Pep Guardiola’s squad fell to a relatively surprising 3-4 defeat to Al Hilal in Orlando, Florida.
It was that result that largely sparked debate among supporters online as to whether further market activity was required, particularly in light of Guardiola’s comments insisting upon a trimming of his squad list.
Taking to X, we asked supporters what changes would still be needed during the weeks that remain in the lead up to the new Premier League season, as City gear up to open their campaign with a visit to Wolves at Molineux on Saturday 16 August.
Among the suggestions from fans was the need for a new goalkeeper, particularly after Ederson’s mistake leading to an equalising goal in the Club World Cup group stage against Juventus, and his far-from inspiring showing against Al Hilal.
City have been linked with FC Porto’s Diogo Costa as a potential new number one, but any move for the Portugal international is likely to be dependant on the sale of Ederson, who is attracting interest from Saudi Arabia.
Other positions that fans have suggested require improvement are right-back – following the sale of Kyle Walker to Burnley, and Matheus Nunes and Rico Lewis as the only existing options in the position – as well as centre-back.
Despite the arrivals of Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis during the January transfer window, neither player has been handed a clear opportunity in the first-team squad since and some fans are concerned by the longevity of Manuel Akanji, John Stones, and Vitor Reis.
Some supporters responded to our open question with suggestions of a ‘keep or sell’ list of their own, with one response indicating a need to remove Kalvin Phillips, Jack Grealish, Ederson, Mateo Kovacic, John Stones, Ilkay Gundogan, and Bernardo Silva.
The same response also indicated a need for all of Oscar Bobb, Vitor Reis, and James McAtee to leave Manchester City, albeit on temporary agreements to develop themselves elsewhere in Europe.
Another list indicated a need for Manuel Akanji to depart, while demanding City bring in Tino Livramento, another new midfielder, and a new number one in either Diogo Costa or Lucas Chevalier from Lille.
On the same subject of potential new signings, another fan suggested that Hugo Viana and his recruitment team should sign a new goalkeeper, a new left-footed central defender, a new right-back, and possibly Real Madrid’s Rodrygo.
