After facing defeat in their UEFA Champions League game against Paris Saint-Germain, FC Barcelona succumbed to another loss last night as they took on Sevilla in La Liga. The Blaugranes were defeated by the Andalusians by a 4-1 scoreline, handing them their first league defeat of the 2025/26 season.

One could have expected Hansi Flick to showcase his anger and disappointment after the game. However, as Mundo Deportivo has reported, the German coach was rather understanding of why his team performed below its expected levels as he addressed a press conference after the game.

The main highlights from this presser are as follows:

The German coach reassured that this defeat is only a minor blip, and his team will still compete for all the big titles:

“With this defeat and the emotions we have, it’s important that when we return after the break, we fight for every title — La Liga, the Copa, everything. That’s what we want.”

The Barcelona manager accepted that he also needs to work to eliminate some of the shortcomings that his team showed in this match:

“Our goal is to have the ball, to have possession. In the first half, that wasn’t the case, and there are many reasons for it. I have to be involved in that — I want to be involved in that — to see how to analyze it.”

Despite being unable to stage a comeback, Flick was rather satisfied with how his team played in the second half:

“The first half wasn’t good. They played one-on-one, very aggressively, and we had no solutions to bring the ball out. In the second half, I appreciated the reaction, how we played — it was good to see.”

The German coach was not too concerned with how his team conceded the goals, but with the general direction the team is taking:

“I don’t need excuses for the goals. We need to focus on the mistakes and the defeat. The most important thing is the direction we’re taking — the system and the structure.”

The Barcelona manager again reiterated his disappointment with the first half:

“In the first half, we made big mistakes. We can talk about many things, but we have to recognize that the first half was very bad, and the second was much better.”

Flick also recognized that his team had the opportunity to tie the score and turn the game in their favor:

“We could have scored the second goal, and maybe the game would’ve changed, but that’s in the past. What we have to do is learn from this match and from the one against PSG. And we will learn.”

The German coach was also hopeful that the return of some important players would help his team get back to its best level:

“After the international break, we’ll recover important players — it’s important that everyone returns to their best level.”

The Blaugrana tactician also apologized to the fans for this defeat:

“We have to accept that we lost and look forward. We work for the club, for the fans. They came here, and of course, they’re disappointed. But we have to keep our energy up until the end.”

The German coach also rued the scoring chances missed by his team:

“Football is about goals. If you score, you win — and today, we weren’t able to. We had chances, but we couldn’t take them. The result isn’t good, but heads up — let’s go!”

Although a 4-1 defeat would definitely have hurt, Flick was clear that this was not the most painful loss for him:

“The most painful one was in Milan. I have to accept this loss, but I’m positive. We have to change. Especially in the first half, we made too many mistakes — we couldn’t control the game.”

The former Bayern Munich coach believed the international break is coming at a good time for him:

“At this moment, it’s good to have a break. For the players, going with their national teams and finding a different atmosphere can be good. What I told them is that when we return, we’ll address things and work hard to get back to our level. But we need the players at their best.”

The Barcelona trainer was also looking to take several lessons away from this defeat:

“I know we have to analyze many things, especially from the first half, and train them — look at how we can play in different spaces depending on the type of match.”

Lastly, the German coach also opened up on what he was intending to do with his starting lineup:

“Our game plan was based on expecting a back five, but they used a back four. We changed things in the second half. If we’re capable of playing against any team, we have to prove we can adapt… The second half and the reaction were good to see.”

It is good to see Hansi Flick keeping a good demeanour despite this heartbreaking defeat. Hopefully, Barcelona will take good advantage of the international break and come back stronger to turn things around in two weeks.
