‘We dominated the game’ – Wiegman happy with England performance against Austria | OneFootball

England head coach Sarina Wiegman said that she was pleased with her side’s performance as they defeated Austria 1-0 at The Stadium of Light this afternoon.

The Lionesses were on top for large spells of the game and added another three points to their FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 qualifying tally thanks to Ellen White’s first half goal.

When speaking in the post-match press conference, Wiegman was pleased to see her side come out on top in blustery conditions and she was particularly happy to see the Lionesses dominate the proceedings.

“First of all, we are very happy with this win against an opponent who were very well organised and who were sometimes pretty dangerous on the counter attack,” Wiegman said.

“I think it was a good performance but we didn’t start that well and there were times in the second half when we had to tighten up as we made some mistakes which they almost capitalised on.

“Overall, we dominated the game, we had lots of possession, especially in the first half and we created many chances so I am proud of the squad.”

The conditions were atrocious at times with high winds and heavy sleet but Wiegman did not feel that the weather impacted the game.

She commented by saying “I didn’t think that it affected the game that much. When we started playing, the wind wasn’t that bad neither was the storm that we expected in the stadium but I think that the pitch had taken a lot of rain. We made sure that we only focused on football.”

Goalscorer White is now just one goal short of equalling Kelly Smith’s record for England while her outing on Wearside was her 100th for the Lionesses at senior level. Wiegman had plenty of praise for the Manchester City forward after the match.

“It is an incredible achievement and if you win 100 caps, you have been so consistent,” Wiegman said. “Working with Ellen, I have learnt that she is a real professional player and a terrific team player.

“With her consistency, she wants to become a better player every day and that is really special so she deserves the recognition.”

England return to action on Tuesday evening when they face Latvia at The Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster.
