FC Barcelona put in a heroic performance in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final against Atletico Madrid last night, and came to the brink of cancelling the 4-0 deficit from the first leg as they won 3-0.

However, they were still unable to get the better of the Colchoneros on aggregate, and thus were eliminated from the competition.

Still, there is no doubt that the team made a very good effort in very difficult circumstances. As Mundo Deportivo has reported, Hansi Flick was also proud of his team’s performance, despite not being able to get the required result, as he spoke to the press after the game:

“We can be very proud of our performance, but we are disappointed. We had chances, but in the end it wasn’t possible. We have to accept it, and we are proud, but also disappointed.”

While being happy with the performance, the German coach was not really happy with the injuries suffered by his players:

“We have two more injuries, which is bad on the other hand. I’m not happy about these injuries; we have several players injured, and this isn’t right. We’ll have to talk. We have to improve things; we need to speak with the doctors and the fitness staff about how to avoid three players getting injured in one week.”

Hansi Flick once again praised the team’s effort:

“We gave everything, left everything on the pitch, and that’s what I want to see from the team. They did it fantastically.”

For now, the German trainer ensured his team was focused on the upcoming matches:

“It’s disappointing not to reach the final, but we’re proud of this performance and we’re focused on the next matches.”

The Barcelona coach justified his decision to leave Pedri on the pitch late into the match:

“Of course, it was a risk to leave him on, but in the end he did very well and in a transition he saved us. He’s very good and very important for us, and I’m very happy that nothing happened to him.”

Flick also praised the youngsters for their performance in the game:

“We were brave, and we’re proud. It was a spectacular match; I’m very happy with what I saw from the team. We were missing one goal, but we played very well. When you see young players from La Masia playing at this level, they all gave everything for the team. But we’re disappointed—it’s normal—because we had chances to score the fourth goal, but it didn’t come.”

There is no doubt that the team and Hansi Flick put in a strong performance despite the demoralizing aggregate score and the injuries to some key players. Hopefully, Barcelona will continue competing for other trophies as they go further into the season.
