Lille OSC continued their bad start to the new year as they suffered their fourth consecutive defeat across all competitions following last night’s 2-1 loss to RC Celta de Vigo in the UEFA Europa League.
It was a disappointing performance for Les Dogues, who went a goal down within forty seconds. They were given a lifeline when Hugo Sotelo was sent off in the 29th minute, but despite playing the majority of the match against ten men, they were unable to make the advantage count.
Bruno Génésio responded angrily in his post-match comments, with the head coach telling reporters, “Either we’re not preparing properly, and that’s my fault. Or we think we’re playing in a six-a-side tournament, and that’s also my responsibility. We have to stop. We have to take responsibility. It’s not a coincidence. Our performances since the start of the year have been bordering on scandalous.”
He also left a warning to his players, saying, “Everyone has to take responsibility, me included. You’ll see in the coming days. I pick the team. I’m the one primarily responsible. But many others need to take a hard look at themselves.”
Lille will likely need a win in their final match of the Europa League league phase on Thursday when they host SC Freiburg, if they have any hope of progressing into the next round of the competition. Before taking on Freiburg, Lille will play RC Strasbourg Alsace at home on Sunday evening.
