The 43-year-old was formally introduced to the media this afternoon following his move from Slovenian side NK Celje, with sporting director Markus Krösche also present to answer questions.
Riera stressed the importance of removing the fear of making mistakes within his squad:
“I push the boys to have no fear of making mistakes. Mistakes are no problem – they’re part of it. We have to take risks and build self-confidence, without doubting ourselves.”
He added:
“In every game, we want to see progress. What's crucial is that the team continues to develop, believes in our plans, and implements them consistently.”
Krösche highlighted why Riera was the right fit for Die Adler:
“Albert fits our playing style perfectly: offensive, bold and with the ambition to develop players further. In addition, he brings a wealth of experience from his time as a player, which also benefits him in his work as a coach. He has already celebrated successes in his coaching career as well.”
Riera then outlined his aggressive approach and the role of the Deutsche Bank Park atmosphere:
“The first defender is the striker. We won’t play passively and will be very aggressive in the game without the ball. The atmosphere in the stadium is beautiful; that’s also the reason why we love this game.”
Krösche concluded by addressing the need for Frankfurt to rediscover their collective identity amid recent struggles:
“If certain guidelines are framed too broadly, it's human nature for individual developments to emerge toward stronger individualism. On the pitch, a 'every man for himself' mentality has developed rather than acting as a collective. The structure off the pitch also played a role in this. Only if we fulfill our tasks as a collective can we be successful."
Riera is now tasked with preparing his squad for Friday’s trip to Union Berlin, where he will make his managerial debut for the club and attempt to halt a winless run of eight matches in all competitions.
