FC Bayern’s 3-2 win in the DFB Cup at Union Berlin was overshadowed by a serious moment: Aleksandar Pavlovic had to be substituted shortly after the break due to injury.
The 21-year-old immediately grabbed his left thigh and made it clear with just a few steps that he could no longer continue. After brief treatment, the midfielder left the pitch and went straight to the dressing room.
Leon Goretzka came on for Pavlovic – another bitter setback for the up-and-coming Bayern talent. Although he has only been a permanent member of the professional squad for two years, the DFB international has already had to cope with several injuries, including an eye injury as recently as August that cost him three weeks. Just when Pavlovic finally appeared rhythmic and fully resilient again, the next interruption followed.

Vincent Kompany was cautiously optimistic after the cup thriller. „We hope it’s not that bad,“ the coach explained on ZDF. „The muscle has tightened up, I think, and that’s usually not that bad. But of course, we now have three games in six days, which is important for me.“
The Belgian made it clear that he would hate to lose Pavlovic – especially in this intense phase.
Sporting director Max Eberl is also not expecting a serious injury, but urges patience. „We hope not, but I can’t say a diagnosis yet. He probably has a muscular injury, that’s what it looked like,“ said Eberl after the final whistle.
It remains to be seen when the exact examination will take place and how long Pavlovic could be out for. The only thing that is clear is that any extended absence would be a bitter blow for Bayern, as the youngster has long since established himself as an important building block in midfield – and has only just got back into his stride.
