England head coach Sarina Wiegman says that there’s no extra pressure hanging over her side and that they know exactly what they want to acheive at UEFA Women’s EURO 2025.

The Lionesses get their tournament underway with a group fixture against France in Zürich this evening.

Over the last decade, England have always reached the latter stages of major tournaments but head coach Wiegman says that UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 brings no additional pressure for the Lionesses.

“It doesn’t feel that different because it’s always been there – high expectations,” Wiegman said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “We have high expectations for ourselves too.

“We just want to do really well. We are here and we know exactly where we want to go to. We have to be the best prepared, we have to have the best game plans to be able to adapt to whatever we have in-front of us.

“The team are in a really good place, they’re really well-bonded. We’ve worked really hard and we will keep on working really hard in every single game and every single training session and that’s what you can control.”

Opponents France go into the tournament without some experienced stars but Wiegman still sees a team that’s full of quality.

She said “I think the French team is very strong and they have young players coming through. Of course, Wendie Renard is not there and [Eugenie] Le Sommer’s not there, they’ve been great players for the team too. The coach picked other players.

“I think they’re very talented and they have already shown that they’re a very powerful, quick team that can play really well.”

England won UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 while they were FIFA Women’s World Cup finalists in 2023. Wiegman said that past acheivements will always be remembered but it’s time to move on.

She said “We absolutely cherish what we’ve done before, we will never forget it. They were lifetime experiences for ourselves, our families and also, for the fans but you have to move on. Things are changing and developing very quickly so we have to do the same.”

England’s UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 fixture against France kicks-off at 8pm.
