Stuttgart were left to rue missed chances after a Europa League defeat in Rome, with Sebastian Hoeneß urging his side to reflect. They face Young Boys next week with everything still at stake.
Despite matching the hosts in many areas, Roma were more ruthless and moved into the top eight. Deniz Undav and Ermedin Demirovic missed chances to draw level before Niccolo Pisilli’s second of the night in added time sealed it.
“We need to look at ourselves,” said Sebastian Hoeneß. “At the end of the day, you need to score the goals. We had the chances,” he told RTL.
“We are disappointed with the result, but certainly not the performance,” he added. “It could have been a great evening if we had scored from the chances we created.”
Those finishing issues have surfaced lately. Stuttgart avoided embarrassment against Eintracht Frankfurt, but failed to beat Union Berlin last time out after missing four big chances.
“We have seen in the last games that we need to concentrate more near the goal, in the last pass or the final shot,” said captain Atakan Karazor. Sitting outside the top eight before the final round, they must beat Young Boys and rely on other results for an automatic round of 16 spot.
From the Roma bench, Gian Piero Gasperini called it a perfect match, praised involving everyone against a strong team and said it was a demanding test. He now leads Hoeneß by four goals to nil, after his Atalanta side won 2-0 against Stuttgart in last season’s Champions League.
Stuttgart now turn to an away trip to Borussia Mönchengladbach this weekend, before the league-phase finale next Thursday.
